Relationship Between Period of Stay Renewal and Passport Renewal

- The employee’s passport will soon expire and will be renewed. Around the same time, the employee’s period of stay will also expire, so we need to file a renewal. Can we submit the extension application while the passport renewal is in progress?
- Yes. You can submit an extension of period of stay application while the passport is being renewed. On the application form, note that the passport is “under renewal” and attach a separate statement explaining that the passport has not yet been issued.
If examination is completed and the new residence card is ready for pickup while the passport renewal is still in process, you can similarly proceed by submitting the same statement explaining that the passport has not yet been issued at the time of receipt.
Procedures can vary by the Regional Immigration Services Bureau that will receive the filing, so we recommend confirming the above handling with the competent Bureau in advance of submission.
